Overview
Bagamoyo's name is said to derive from a Swahili phrase meaning 'lay down your heart,' reflecting its dark history as a departure point for enslaved people being shipped onward. It later became the first capital of German East Africa, leaving a distinct layer of colonial architecture alongside its earlier Swahili and Arab trading heritage.
