Between the 13th and 16th centuries, Kilwa Kisiwani was a major Indian Ocean trading power, dealing in gold, ivory and slaves, with its wealth reflected in the mosque and palace ruins that remain today. This is a distinct historical period and location from Olduvai Gorge or Zanzibar's Stone Town, focused specifically on Swahili trading history.
