Overview
While most visitors to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area stay within the main crater, the surrounding highlands hold several smaller, walkable volcanic craters rarely visited by comparison. Empakaai's crater floor holds a deep soda lake often visited by flamingos, while Olmoti's crater rim overlooks a waterfall - both explored on foot with an armed ranger, a genuinely different experience from a vehicle-based crater safari.
